Report question (refer to your learning guide)
Current issues in contemporary people management
Contemporary People Management has to be concerned with:
(a) Corporate Social Responsibility (textbook, p. 620 & 543f.), (b) Sustainability (p. 620), and (c) Global Warming (see references below)?
How can Contemporary People Management achieve a higher awareness of these issues at corporate and human resource level? Develop four [4] recommendations.
Tutorial Preparation:
Note: (the tutorial differs from your report question)
Case Study:
Measuring the HR function’s contribution to achieving overall organisational goals is more than designing and implementing a set of evaluative tools to the performance of this function. It is imperative to know the current context that is surrounding when assessing organisational performance. In short, there is a link between CPM / HRM and a) corporate sustainability; b) CSR; c) global warming. Relating CPM / HRM to “these three issues” (a-c) is vital. You need to be able to show how these three issues can ‘put a firm a step ahead’? and how CPM / HRM can assist in implementing corporate sustainability, CSR, and related programmes that address global warming? Use these cases study below to show how you -as an HR practitioner- would seek to extend the traditional role of Contemporary People Management and HRM.
Assessment 1: Case study presentation (10%) and report (15%) Overview This case study is designed allow students to achieve these unit learning outcomes: ? Describe and explain the key functions and practices associated with contemporary people management, HRM, and industrial relations; additionally, advocate improvements to practice of contemporary people management. ? Explain the contribution of strategic HRM to contemporary people management and organisational success. ? Analyse why effective people management HRM remains a challenging task for managers. ? Develop analytical and communication skills appropriate for participating in contemporary people management, HRM, and employment relations in organisations and in multicultural societies. Details Assessment one has two components: 1. An oral presentation of contemporary people management and HRM case studies with group work and exercises (10%). 2. An individually written report (15%). ?Note: During the first session (session 1), students will organise small working groups of 2 - 4 participants to accomplish this part of the assignment. Report Your written report should answer the question using a clear report-style structure (synopsis, introduction, part a: research and part b: discussion, conclusion, and four [4] recommendations). Length: 1,500 words (double spacing). References It must demonstrate evidence of wide reading – a minimum of five (5) “academic” references is required. Note that most internet sites are popular references, not academic references. However, the use of online academic journals contained in the e-collections of the UWS library web-site is acceptable, and indeed, encouraged. The report must use the Harvard system of referencing to indicate all sources of information and include an alphabetised reference list of those sources cited in your report. Wikipedia Do not over-use Wikipedia as a source for any work undertaken in this unit. Citation of this source will be penalised by way of a loss of marks or more severe penalty. vUWS Students should refer to the additional resources available at: the contemporary people management (CPM) vUWS web site or review the reading list. Submission Submission of a “hard-copy” version is on the week you present your tutorial. Students must use “individual” report marking guide in this learning guide (see below) to self-evaluate your report prior to its submission.
